Did a quick project this week! As I’ve said in the past, I really like turbans and I finally got my act together to give one a try. So this is a prototype more than a finished one . I made a simple fabric shape to use as a base to my turban using a pattern and than I took a large piece of fabric and basically twisted and folded, pinning as I went. After trying it on my head and thinking it looked pretty good, I got down to sewing all the folds down – invisible and neat! I’ve still got a few folds to sew. I am pretty satisfied with the result – there’s just one of the sides I’m not quite happy with (photo n°3), the folds aren’t ‘natural’ enough but that’s because the fabric there is straight on and not on the bias. I also did discovered that I need to change my pattern a little bit. But hey, it’s a just a first try, I’ll know what to keep on eye next time I have another go! What do you think? I’ve got some lovely red cotton/linen blend fabric that would look great for a turban…back to work!

Il me reste encore quelques plis à coudre.

It’s been a while since I last made a hat pattern, but I was really in the mood the other day so I got out some paper and the needed tools (calculator, compass, french curve…). I thought I’d start by doing a simple shape to ease back slowly into things. It wasn’t too long before I remembered I sort of hate pattern making! I’m used to just getting hold of the fabric (or whatever material, be it felt, straw…) and manipulating it with my hands. Having to draw out a pattern out flat on paper and trying to imagine it in volume is really hard…and painful! And I had to check how to calculate a circle’s perimeter! I haven’t quite done with the trimming on the hat but the hat it’s self is finished – a wide brimmed summer hat! I wanted to do something a bit eye-catching for the trimming – at first I did some stuff with some white ribbons curling everywhere, but it didn’t look great so I went with some white roses (they are sewn by hand, so it’s taking a while!). Even thought it’s not fun, I’ll be doing some more patterns (I have some ideas that’ll need them) and well, it’s good to keep all my skills in some sort of good condition. Practice makes perfect!

It’s times like this I hate the layout I chose for this site. You know it, I know it – big pics on my blog, no good! Sorry!
As you know, big weddings mean HATS. And just because it’s a TV show (“Gossip Girl” – basically the lives of rich kids living in the Upper East Side, New York), a royal wedding is a royal wedding, and it still means HATS! And headwear has always been present in “Gossip Girl”, I mean what would the headband be today without the character of Blair Waldorf ? In episode 13 of season five, we got to see the lovely Blair marry Prince Louis (or if you have seen this episode, “Evil Louis who deserves a punch in the face”). All the main female characters were wearing some sort of hat (apart from Blair who was wearing a dazzling tiara, of course)!! They were all wearing quite small fascinators (except Georgina Sparks, whose hat was too ridiculous for me to post, maybe it was a gentle nudge at Princess Beatrice’s hat at Kate & Will’s wedding?), I expect to keep the actresses faces clear and visible. The only big hats were worn by the crowd in the church. I thought all hats went well with the outfits etc. except for the one worn by Blair’s mother (Eleanor, last photo) – with her dark brown hair, the base of her fascinator (made out of what looks like sinamay) didn’t stand out enough and all I saw at first was the black flower on top. It’s a bit of a shame, because Eleanor really was quite an important figure in the episode (trying to make her daughter happy and all even if it meant ruining a royal wedding) and there she is wearing a bit off puzzling headwear. Not a good choice!
Obviously, I have a favorite! I always do! I love Lily’s fascinator (top photo) – it went great with her outfit as well as her face, and it is very ‘Lily’. By very ‘Lily’ I mean, simple, elegant, lovely materials or textures (this one looked like a silk covered structure) and strong graphic lines. I always love how they dress Lily on the show.
All in all, “Gossip Girl” is still pretty amazing for it’s strong style sense and I really do think it will be remembered in time for how it has influenced fashion. The story line may be not as good as it used to be and you might even be embarrassed to say you watch it, but this show has merit! I think nobody can deny that it really has pushed the world of high fashion over into the lives of everyday people who maybe wouldn’t have even been interested otherwise. Each character has their own defined style and really are a source of inspiration. Even Blair’s polish maid, Dorota, has her fashion moments!
XOXO!

XOXO!

After a very mild beginning to winter, I can officially say that winter has bitten us in the bum and it’s now freezing! I have no idea how I’m physically going to face this weekend (it’s going to be -13°c/8.5°F here Saturday morning!), but I’m guessing it’s going to involve a lot of tea and at least two pairs of socks. And FOOD! Lots of it! I already feel like I’m eating twice as much as usual…uh oh! After eating a large amount of cheese tonight, I got my sugar high by looking at some crazy hat shaped cakes on the net! It was funny to see that when I did my search in french, not many results came up! Heavily decorated novelty cakes aren’t really part of french culture (whereas americans love them apparently!). Some of the recurring themes that came up (when I did my search in english!) were baseball caps, Saint Patrick/Leprechaun hats, the Sorting Hat from Harry Potter (like the one on the first photo, pretty amazing! Made by the Quirky Confectioner)…the theme that came back the most was Dr. Seuss’ “Cat in the Hat”, which does make sense. It’s a popular children’s book (ok, it’s not well known in France) that was made into a film a few years ago…who wouldn’t want a “Cat in the Hat” cake to show off to their friends at a birthday party?! The cake I found (pic n°2) is actually a wedding cake made for a competition (read about it here). I like the fact that it’s not too over the top and really cleverly thought out (see how Cat is actually holding the other cake?). For the more elderly ladies, there were more ‘serious’ hat cakes, as you can see on the last pic. I think these ones are pretty good with all the feathers and flowers (no, the trimmings aren’t edible), it really makes you think of a hat and believe me there are some ugly hat cakes on google! Made by B’dazzlin Cakes.
The most amazing hat cake though has to be without a doubt the cupcake (photo n°3) made by a German bakery, who were inspired by the hat worn by Princess Beatrice at the royal wedding last year (and we are talking Kate and William…just making sure)! I’m in love with it! How adorable! Has to be the most amazing thing I’ve seen this week! I have to eat one! The bakery made a whole set of cupcakes inspired by the wedding, be sure to check them out – such a great idea, such cuteness…YUMMY!
Now, to drink some more tea…

A foison!

Hey you all! I wanted to do a post about the fashion shows going on at the moment, but the Paris Fashion Week hasn’t finished yet and I wouldn’t have much to go on – though I can already say I love the Givenchy collection! As well as looking at the photos over on Style.Com, I’m enjoying following ShowStudio on Twitter at the moment, which has some quite snide/fun tweets written at the fashion shows. Maybe a bit over the top some times, but it’s a breath of fresh air from the usual tweets from fashion shows with just a photo and the name of the brand/house. I’m also enjoying looking at some ‘street style’ photos taken outside the shows – the ones above are all by Tommy Ton from his famous Jak & Jil blog. And, yes, I did choose hat photos on purpose (the guy in orange is just great!). It got me thinking about the latest issue of “Industrie” magazine (issue n°4), which includes a “Fashion Media A-List” (Jak & Jil is on it obviously, page 20). Most of the time in magazines, I only sort of half read the editor’s letter but that’s not the case in “Industrie”, the editors’ letter is always a good read (there are two head editors over at “Industrie”). This issue’s letter is titled “Is Anyone Paying Attention ? – the slow demise and rapid fragmentation of the style media”, and it brought up some interesting points. It talked about how fashion media has changed and how it’s lost it’s magic for various reasons , celebrity covers, publicists, blogs…That it has to stop hiding behind a false sense of security and see that fashion media today is about who has the most relevance. Who makes us pay attention? Who influences us? Fashion media has to play on various fronts now and it has to evolve, stop conforming to genreal media and return to being real fashion media (“let fashion become fashion again”). This A-List includes blogs, writers, online platforms (tumblr, Business of Fashion…), photographers, specific magazines…a compilation of ”the most powerful figures in fashion media in 2012″. One heck of a good read!
I did try finding the letter on the net but in vain, and I really didn’t think typing the whole thing out here was the best move. And, of course, it’s a weird format so I can’t really scan, so basically if you come across the magazine, do pick it up!

So, finally managed to take some photos of my current work! It’s so hard dashing around during my lunch break when the sun is out to get a few shots! I hate it when it gets dark so early, drives me mad! Anyway, I’ve started off the year with a few small items (I’ve got more things waiting to be sewn this weekend!) – including a bit of a girly cycling cap and a cute headband! What do you think of them? I quite fancy the headband, I think I’m going to make one for myself but in a different shade of fabric. I do have a blue one waiting to be sewn but that will be for my store (maybe for one of you peeps out there!). If you want to see more photos or if you are interested in purchasing one of my designs, go check out my online store Chalkie’s Bazaar!

The winter sales have only just started here in France and though I don’t really have any money to spend, I know I’m going to end up buying some clothes – some that I need (new swimming costume), some that I don’t … I was going round the American Apparel web site (on the first day of the sales, I woke up to -30% from them in my mail box), I came across their perspex visor. It’s the sort of really kitsch/fun/colorful/retro thing I love! It’s also the sort of thing you can NEVER actually wear, unless you’re an old grandma and/or into poker. Green visors (called green ‘eyeshades’) first appeared at the end of the 19th century and were worn to lessen strain on the eyes. They were first worn by people whose jobs required a strong eye vision while concentrating an small details- such as accountants and telegraphers (who at the time also had to deal with harsh lighting). Obviously, very useful if you’re dealing cards in a casino too. And for keeping the sun out of your eyes in general! As you know, I don’t work in a casino. And, unfortunately, I don’t rock the sporty “I play tennis” look. But it is so tempting…and isn’t the sales when you’re supposed to buy crazy items like this? I particularly like the transparent and black one (available from American Apparel and Asos!). Maybe if I get one, I could just wear a sweat band on my wrist to perfect the whole look…Sales, how I loath you!
On another note, I’ve started sewing a few bits and bobs, getting back into the swing of things! Hopefully I’ll be able to take a few pictures this weekend!! Happy sales!

Bonnes soldes!

Happy New Year! I hope everybody is well and that the year 2012 is off to a good start!
To ease myself back into blogging, I thought I do a small movie/hat post. I must admit I quite enjoy doing posts like this, when I get to mix up a couple of my different interests, I’m not all about hats (but if you’ve been following my blog, you’ll probably have noticed!). Throughout December I managed to watch the film “Big Trouble in Little China” (by John Carpenter, 1986) several times. I had seen it when I was kid and always remembered little details from it (such as the villain Lo Pan, the very scary chinese guy…) and after a family member mentioned it, I thought I’d watch it again. As for the story, IMDB puts it pretty well – ”An All-American trucker gets dragged into a centuries-old mystical battle in Chinatown”. It’s pretty crazy with some great lines, really bad special effects, and some really interesting headwear! Obviously, as you can guess by the title, there’s a lot of asian inspiration, but I also find there’s an ancient egyptian vibe going on with Lo Pan’s headwear (for example, on photo n°3), but that could just be me not knowing enough about traditional asian headwear! I can can also say that the huge woven straw hats (bottom pic) make me think of the hats worn by japanese shinto monks (I once saw a shinto monk on a trip to Tokyo, begging in the rain, very imposing and hardcore). I’m sure similar hats exist all over Asia, but let me babble ok!
My inner princess totally digs the jeweled tiaras worn by the leading ladies. So intricate! So sparkly!…And I love the way they fan out so much around their faces (like iguanas or something…). Really theatrical, and that’s just what I like! Very inspiring!
So, yes, start this month off with a fun classic 80′s movie and some exuberant hats! And if you have any films to recommend me that has millinery importance, let me know!

Ok. Animal hats. Ears. Antlers. Cats. Rabbits… I think anybody with eyes will have noticed that animal headwear has been getting more and more trendy these past few years. And obviously, dog ears aren’t in (cats rule the world, right?!). The bunny ears on the first photo, done by Maison Michel, have been worn by every celebrity under the sun (Gaga, Lily Allen, one of the Olsen twins, …) and were a big hit when they first appeared (you can make your own by following one of the many tutorials hanging about on the net). But would I wear them? I find animal hats cute in magazine fashion spreads and on the cat walk…but I think I’d just look like a stupid five year old if I ever dared to wear to one in the street . I’m not good on pulling off cute/kawaii/geekish looks. Or…I’d just look like a cheap trashy Playboy bunny wannabe…uh, no thanks! As for a pair of antlers…all I can see is a big flashing sign saying ‘danger’ in capital letters (but ‘Danger’ is my middle name!!). I went onto Asos’ website the other day and I saw that they had quite a few animal chapkas for sale (like on the last pic)…it’s so crazy and BIG! B-I-G! Just makes you want to stroke them! Anyway, I came across this article from the New York Times that sort of covers all the animal hat questions, thought it might interest you peeps! All this made me think of an old photo shoot from Pop Magazine (issue n°14, back in the day when there were cute animals in every issue…) where they had bunnies wearing headwear by Stephen Jones! How sweet and cute!!!? I think you have to agree that rabbits wearing small well-made non kitsch headwear is the best! Us humans can’t pull off that much “adorableness”!! Do you think animal hats are a big mistake? Or do you think it’s the best think to happen to the hat world?

Donc.
