I was luckily given this chain stitch sewing machine a while back (my bosses gave it to me for free!) but I’ve never really gotten round to using  it. Today, I gave it a good clean down and oiled eveything that moves and hopefully will give it a serious try-out tomorrow. The machine is linked up to a small electic motor, everything works fine, it just hasn’t been used in a long time. A chain stitch machine is used to sew straw braid (or any other braid/ribbon), as the the needle is completely on the left your work can turn freely on it’s self in a spiral manner - as you can see on the last photo (that’s not my machine, I took this photo while doing an internship). Making a complete hat on a such a machine can take a lot of practise, you have to know when to ‘pull’ on the braid or when to leave it slack, to vary the shape of the hat. This is going to be difficult! I’m just going to be glad if I can do a flat circle! Also, I haven’t figured out what two of the knobs on the machine are for, I’m guessing one of them is for tension but the other one…? This is going to take some figuring out - wish me luck!

09|Feb|2010 3This is a really old cast iron sewing machine (it weighs a ton!!), there’s the serial number but also a small number written like this, 25-56, it’s all very mysterious!! Did try to have a go today but couldn’t get it to sew, which is strange because when I last tried (to see if it worked) it did!

must be one of these, maybe you can get a manual from singer, seems as if they still have them.
Amazing, i hope I’ll be able to find one of the straw-sewing machines too. Have been looking for one for quite some years. Good luck with yours!

14|May|2010 8Thank you for answering me back, I found one about 2 weeks ago and it was delivered about a week ago. My husband is making a table for it now and we bought a motor and a belt for it. The machine was made before 1900. If you go to FACEBOOK and type in HATALK you will see a picture of it. God Bless.
