August is over and the air is already getting nippy in the mornings (and I’m tired of talking about NY). This means that my personal hat making break is over (I went back to my paying hat making job 10 days ago) and I have no excuse for not finishing what I started a while ago (I can’t remember when…). So, what am I working on? Well, I’m sort of working an a japanese-y style inspired thing…as you can see on the photo, it’s early days yet! I saw the film ‘Sakuran’ a couple of monthes ago, which is has loads of vibrant bright colors and quite a few goldfish in it (those ones on the pic swam here all the way from New York!), I think I got the whole vibe from there. I have not idea when I’ll finish it but I’ve blogged about it now, so I have no choice but to get busy sewing!

Hope you’re not all sick of NY, cause, well, I’m not finished yet!! So, there I was, skipping down 6th Avenue when I came across a couple of cool stores for crafty folk : M&J Trimmings and Toho Shoji. There are probably other cool supply places in NYC (I’m just an ignorant tourist!), so please do feel free to share your addresses. So, M&J Trimmings just blew me away, it’s huge and every surface available is covered with…trimmings! Buttons, ribbons, tassels, lace, rhinestones… you name it, they’ve got it (ok, almost). I’ve never come across a shop like this here in France, it was like waking up on christmas morning! I spent ages in there, deciding what to buy - I settled on a couple of pink peacock feathers, some iron-on nailheads (which I really want to try out) and some other little things. Very hard not to spend all my money! Their website seems to offer a good selection of products but less then in store. They also ship abroard, need to check it out in depth. The other store was close-by, called Toho Shoji. Toho Shoji specialize in jewelry supplies (beads, chains, clasps…), I’m no expert in making jewelry but I thought they were good (I didn’t really look at their beads though). I just picked up some bits and bobs to make myself some stuff (like my cute fortune cookie necklace!). Well, that’s that, still a couple more New York posts to come I think then you’ll be free!

As you can imagine I went around quite a lot of museums in New York - eight in all - I’m not going to talk about all of them (do you want to be tortured?), but I had to tell you guys about the exhibit at the Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum (it’s like two blocks away from the Guggenheim, which I DIDN’T go to!). Why? Because it’s the best design exhibit I’ve seen in a while (not including fashion exhibits) and because Etsy is part of it! They are currently holding the national design triennial with the title ‘why design now?’. The ‘answer’ being to address social and ecological problems. The exhibit covered all sectors of design (product, architecture, fashion, communication) and was devided into several themes : energy, mobility, community, materials, prosperity, health, communication and simplicity. Etsy was part of the communication section. Photos weren’t allowed, the pic above is from the exhibition book. The concept of Etsy was well explained (’an online international marketplace for handmade goods that connects makers to consumers’…) and there were a couple of items on display. They also stressed on the growth of Etsy - how despite recent slumps in general consumption, Etsy hasn’t been effected by this. The exhibit book sums it up well, ‘Buying goods directly from makers turns out to be economical while appealing to people’s longing for authentic experiences with objects and the people who make them’. Yep, Etsy’s cool! The Cooper-Hewitt has loads of info on their website (basically everything that’s in the exhibit book, so if you want to see more that’s said about Etsy, you can). There really was some great stuff to be seen, I’m so glad I went. I can’t share everything, but here are my three top favorite projects from the exhibition :
- ‘Touch Magazine 2/3′, which uses the thermography technique to be accessible to sighted and non-sighted readers alike
-the ‘Haptica watch’, a watch that displays the time in braille
-the ‘Girl Effect campaign’, a communication project aiming to empower girls in developing countries

While over in New York I though it would be a good opportunity to go over to the Etsy headquarters (in Brooklyn, you could see the Manhatten bridge out of the window) and take part in a craft night. Craft nights are held every Monday from 4 - 8pm. I went on August 9th, the theme was ’summer camp’ and we got to make friendship bracelets, keyrings with plastic lanyards and god eyes. As I have already made friendship bracelets in the past I stuck to the last two activities. The god eyes were fun to make (as you can see on the last photo I have an obvious natural talent for it!), but as for doing making those keyrings by sort of weaving those plastic threads (something everybody has done before in their childhood apart for me!) well, my first attempt was good but it didn’t convince me enough to make another one (or post a photo) hehehe! It was great to just sit down and chit chat with everybody there (while trying to figure where we went wrong with those lanyards…), craft nights are open to everyone by the way - not just Etsy people. I got there at the beginning, at 4pm, there were only a few people but as time went by more and more arrived and it was soon pretty much packed! It’s was so nice to be able to meet up with other crafty peeps, learning something new, in a fun atomsphere (and by the way, all materials are provided for free). Also, of what I saw of the offices, those Etsy folk get to work in a cool snazzy place, I want to work for Etsy now! If you want to attend a craft night, there’s more info in the Etsy Storque. And if the people who I managed to talk to read this post, it was lovely meeting you all!

While in New York, I was lucky enough to go visit the Schmalberg flowermakers! I was shown around and they explained to me how their fabric flowers were made (and as you can see, I was allowed to take photos!). So, here are the basic steps of how the flowers are made :
-first off, each flower corresponds to a specific mold (those are the metal things you can see on those shelves there) or a group of molds (to get all those different layers of petals), so a choice has to be made! The molds are all pretty much antiques, and come in all shapes and sizes.
-when a fabric has been decided on too (most of the times it’s supplied by the client), it’s then stiffened with starch then left to dry.
-afterwards, the flower/petal shape is cut out of the fabric and placed in between the two parts (one positive, one negative) of the heated mold and pressed into shape. And voilà! You have part of a flower!
-all that’s left is to assemble all the parts to have the full flower (that’s what’s going on in the last photo). I asked the lady busy putting the flowers together how many she made in a day, she answered that it depended on how complex the design was, but in general 250-300 per day. And yes, they are all glue-gunned together (my heart did break a little).
Schmalberg make flowers all year round, but they do suffer from cheaper flowers produced abroard and do employ less people then before. It was really kind of them to let me come and have a look at their work (especially as they were busy!). They even just let me walk about as I pleased! There were really some lovely flowers to see (boxes and boxes of them everywhere!) - I saw some flashy colored leather flowers to die for!
I was adviced to go there by the milliner Ellen Christine (who I met a few days beforehand just to see her work and have a chat), who told them I’d be popping over at some point, so I don’t actually know if you can just go and visit the workshop as you please. If you are interested in doing so, maybe contact them first to check.

This summer I’m off to New York for some holidays (but I’ve already told you that in a past post I think…yep, I’m excited). So, I thought I’d tell you folks about the pork pie hat, which for me is a symbolic american hat - though well, it’s not really american (I’m making sense, right?). The pork pie hat first originated in Great Britain, I’m not sure when exactly - I’ve read different dates (18th century, mid 19th century…). The pork pie hat is a shallow hat with a flat top that’s indented all around (like a really pork pie, hence the name!), so no you’re not allowed to get it mixed up with a fedora or a trilby (which have ‘pinched’ crowns)! Traditionally made out of felt, the straw version is, like all style of hats, making a big come back. For me the pork pie is american for two reasons : Buster Keaton and jazz music! First off, Keaton’s trademark hat is a pork pie - fun fact, amazingly he made his own by transforming fedora hats (yay for Keaton!). Blues music and ska can be linked to pork pie hats but I think jazz is up top. The jazz saxophonist Lester Young is famously linked to this hat (his favourite hat), who inspired the song ‘Goodbye Pork Pie Hat’ composed by Charles Mingus (which has been covered by a whole bunch of people) - so yes, that beats blues and ska! The most famous cover is by Joni Mitchell, you should go give it a listen (I would paste a link but I’m having computer problems….)!!!

Yay! Finshed! Well, I’ve just to put lining on the underside (which will be a pain) but still, finshed to me! At first, the part that falls on the middle of the forehead bothered me and I tried balancing the whole thing out - I tried feathers, beads…but I couldn’t really find anything that seemed to work. Maybe it’s just that I flattened my hair, doesn’t seem right. Doesn’t really matter, after prancing about my apartment with it on my head for a few hours it doesn’t bother me so much now! But if you guys out there have any ideas, do share! I think for the moment I’m sequined out, I’ve been finding sequins all over the place, I even found some in my bed this morning… I really like what I did with the feathers, putting beads the whole length of the ’stem’ (it’s called the rachis really, thanks wikipedia). I find it makes the movement of the feathers more visible. Well, gotta go, clean up all those sequins lying about!!

Youpi!

So, this week I started work on that buckram I stretched out last time. Ok…well, I decided not to do spikes (I just couldn’t be asked to…) and just went with a curly shaped base. Wired the edge, then covered it with a biais strip of cloth. Normally, I should then of covered the all base with a layer of cotton fleece (to ‘absorb’ all the little lumps) but I didn’t have any so…that’s that! I knew I was going to cover the whole of my fascinator with various sorts of trimming so I went with a classic black cotton fabric for my base color. As you can see on the photos, I’m sort of going mad with silver and white sequins (’paillettes’ in french). I’m not sure if I’m going to cover it all with them though, I did want to get in some beads aswell. Even though it takes a long time to do I rather quite enjoy sewing on sequins, maybe it’s theurapeutic?! I had hoped to have advanced a bit more but we’ve been having a heat wave here this week, not easy to do anything (wearing a thimble is pure hell, it’s like my finger has it’s own little sauna!). Hopefully I’ll finish it in the days to come and I’ll show you what it actually looks like worn!
