Last weekend, I went to the annual vintage fashion market. Normally, you’d hear me say “there were some top hats but I didn’t have enough cash for one”, NOT THIS TIME!!! This time I thought to take my cheque book and I went wild! I was walking about the market when I came across a stall that had quite a few hats including several top hats (a few fur felt ones and a collapsible one), all of them were in pretty good condition. And I just had to have a topper! I chose the one that was in the best condition – there’s a spot where the felt is a bit worn on the tip of the crown and there are a few little bumps (maybe I can flatten them out with  bit of steam), but nothing major. I got chatting to the woman holding the stall and seeing how enthusiastic I was about my job and how much buying a top hat meant to me, she so very kindly knocked 10€ off the price and let me choose the hat case/box I wanted  to go with my hat (for FREE!). I chose a leather case, worn and a bit dusty, but completely gorgeous! It is a case specially made for top hats – the hat is put upside down and “hangs” by it’s brim inside. I have no information about the box, but the top hat has got the hatter’s name stamped inside. The hat was made by a french hatter called “Philippe”, in a small place called “Tarare” (it is not far from here where I live). There is also “Paris” stamped inside, so maybe his hats were sold there too. I did try looking up the name on the net but to no avail. I have no clue of when the hat was made unfortunately. I can safely say that it is old though, just by the size. In the past, people did have smaller heads, and this hat is roughly 54cm. That is small! On the other hand, it could have been a child’s hat…either way, I love my top hat!

Le weekend dernier, j’ai été au marché annuel de la mode vintage. D’habitude, vous m’entendriez dire : “il y avait quelques chapeaux haut  de forme mais je n’avais pas assez d’argent pour en acheter un”, PAS CETTE FOIS-CI!!! Cette fois-ci j’ai pensé à prendre mon chéquier et j’ai fait des folies! Je déambulais dans le marché quand je suis tombée sur un stand qui vendait pas mal de chapeaux, dont plusieurs haut de forme (plusieurs taupés et un gibus), tous en assez bon état. Et je devais absolument me procurer un haut de forme! J’ai choisi le moins endommagé : il y a un petit endroit où le feutre est usé sur le bord du fond et quelques petites bosses (peut-être que je pourrais les aplatir avec un peu de vapeur), mais pas de dégâts énormes. J’ai pu discuter avec la commerçante et en voyant à quel point je suis enthousiasmée par mon métier et à quel point avoir un haut de forme était important pour moi, elle m’a très gentiment fait une remise de 10€ et m’a laisser choisir quelle boîte  je voulais pour aller avec mon chapeau (GRATOS!). J’ai choisi une boîte en cuir, usée et un peu poussiéreuse, mais totalement sublime! C’est une boîte faite exprès pour les chapeaux haut de forme : on met le chapeau à l’envers et il est “suspendu” par le bord à l’intérieur. Je n’ai pas d’info sur la boîte, mais le haut de forme a le coup de tampon de son chapelier à l’intérieur. Le chapeau a été fabriqué par un chapelier français nommé “Philippe”, à Tarare (pas de loin d’où je vis). Il y a aussi Paris de tamponné, donc peut-être que ses produits y étaient vendus. J’ai essayé de reagrdé un pe ule nom sur internet, sans succès. Je n’ai aucune idée de quand date le chapeau malheureusement. Je peux dire avec garanti que c’est “vieux”, grâce à la taille. Dans le passé, les gens avaient des têtes plus petites  et ce chapeau mesure environ 54cm. Ca, c’est petit! D’un côté, ça pourrait être un chapeau d’enfant…quoiqu’il en soit j’adore mon chapeau!
