I went to a really cool exhibition the other day, called ‘Art Pour Tous’ (art for everybody) held in the printing museum here in Lyon. It’s a collection of posters from the british public transport system, dating from 1913 to 1970. I was expecting a small exhibition but it was actually quite big – there’s 85 posters on display, taken from the Yale Center for British Art. I really enjoy poster art, so it definitely was a treat for the eyes!! I discovered some really great designers/artists – such as Tom Purvis, who did very bold and graphic posters (that’s some of his work on the second pic), he did over 100  posters for the LNER (London and North Eastern Railway). What did take me by surprise was the amount of posters that were done  by female artists for the London Underground (they employed women artists from the very beginning in the late 19th century) – at least 164 women created posters for them but it is thought that there  were a lot more, considering that not all posters were signed (or just with initials). Totally loving the one you can see on the last photo for the summer sales by Horace Christopher Taylor in 1926! Obviously, poster art has sort of come to an end  in british tranport (apart from the odd ones now and then) - bloody budget cuts!! The exhibition is on until February 13th 2011 (I’m still not used to being in 2010…), which leaves me plenty of time to go see it again!

J’ai été voir une exposition trop géniale l’autre jour,  intitulée  ’Art Pour Tous’ , au musée de l’imprimerie ici à Lyon. C’est une collection d’affiches des tranports publics britanniques, datant de 1913 à 1970. Je m’attendais à une petite expo mais en fait elle était plutôt grande – il y a 85 affiches présentées, venant du Yale Center for British Art. J’adore les affiches ‘artistiques’, donc c’était un vrai régal pour les yeux!! J’ai découvert des designers/artistes formidables - tel que Tom Purvis, qui faisait des affiches très graphiques et voyants (c’est quelques unes de ses affiches sur la deuxième photo), il a fait plus de 100 affiches pour le LNER (Londen and North Eastern Railway). Qu’est-ce qui m’a beaucoup surpris c’est le nombre d’artistes femmes qui ont fait des affiches pour le métro londonien (ils ont employé des femmes dès leur création à la fin du 19ème siècle) – il y a eu au moins 164 femmes mais c’était sûrement plus vu que beaucoup d’affiches sont anonymes (ou juste signées d’initiales). Je suis juste sous le charme de l’affiche ‘summer sales’ sur la dernière photo, faite par Horace Christopher Taylor en 1926! Evidemment, l’affiche artistique a subi un grand déclin dans les transport britanniques (à part de rares affiches de temps en temps)- foutues coupes budgétaires!! L’expo a lieu jusqu’au 13 Février 2011 (je ne suis pas encore habituée à 2010…), ce qui me laisse largement le temps pour y retourner!!
