Every year the small french town of Septfonds (which has a very strong straw hat heritage) holds a hat festival called ‘Estivales du Chapeau’. There is a market area with stalls for milliners and hatters to show and sell their produce and there is also a hat competition open to everybody!! There are various catergories (straw hats, show hats, Saint Catherine hats and an open category). The photos up above are winners from the festival held in 2008. If you are interested in taking part, you can get more information here (there’s a set of rules and contest form in rather badly translated english, but still clear enough I suppose!). I did take part in 2008 (didn’t win…sniff) and I’ll probably be giving it a try again this year, I don’t know why but I’m thinking of making a Saint Catherine’s hat. The hat has to be sent in before the end of June, so there’s still a bit of time!

Chaque année la ville française de Septfonds (qui est très liée à la fabrication du chapeau en paille) tient un festival dédié au chapeau, les Estivales du Chapeau. Il y a un marché où les modistes et chapeliers peuvent tenir un stand pour présenter et vendre leur travail et aussi un concours de chapeaux ouvert à tous!! J’avais participé en 2008 (sans gagner..snif) et je pense reparticiper cette année, je ne sais pas trop pourquoi mais j’ai envie de faire un chapeau de catherinette. Le chapeau doit être envpyé avant fin Juin, donc il y a encore un peu de temps!
